Notification of new Google Mail on iPhone 5

I am inexperienced with the iPhone and its Apps.  I have a Google Mail account for which the administrator has disabled forwarding, IMAP and POP settings for security reasons.  I'd like to get a visible and audible notification of new mail, and I'd also like to be able to check for new mail automatically at short intervals.  Please advise if there is a way.   I don't believe that the gmail app for iPhone can accomplish this, because it appears to rely on a POP or IMAP server.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There is a Gmail app for the iPhone, you can set up notifications in "Settings>Gmail>Notifications" once it is installed.

The app is nice because you can toggle between your work and personal accounts really easily.
