100% hard disk use in windows 10

HI All,

We have recently purchased a new laptop from dell. About 3 months old.

It is running windows 10. 4gb graphics card. 8gb ram. 17 inc monitor. Inspiron 5000 Series.

We have paid for premium support, but they want us to continually run diagnostic tools which always appear to pass.

So I'm posting the issue here hoping it can be resolved.

When I turn the computer on, it takes 15 minutes to become usable after I login. We cannot open any software or even open the start bar.

The network connection drops in and out, software is very slow (word & excel etc)

Things we've tried so far.

1. We have installed and run https://www.malwarebytes.org/
2. Windows and all software is up to date.
3. We have run all dell diagnostic tools for hard drive, network and memory. All pass.
4. I have removed almost all items from startup.
5. We have run anti virus scans from kaspersky.

Any ideas?

I have also noticed when I go to task manager, the hard disk is always at 100% Even after I end task on many applications.

See file attached.

The issue was occurring before we installed kaspersky.

It is connected to a router in the office. no server.

It is hard disk that is at 100%. not the CPU.

And ive been monitoring it, and the resource that uses the highest percentage, seems to change quite often.

Is this laptop using an SSD "Solid State Drive?
And is Trim enabled?
Is space is getting to be a problem and Trim is not functioning correctly this will seriously slow the drive down.
Windows 7 and later versions have native support for SSD's and the operating system detects the presence of an SSD and optimizes operation accordingly.
For SSD devices Windows disables SuperFetch and ReadyBoost, boot-time and application prefetching operations.
Why SSD TRIM Support is So Important and How to Enable It

"And ive been monitoring it, and the resource that uses the highest percentage, seems to change quite often." - then name at least three files it is mostly reading/writing to.

HI All,

Here is what has been done so far.

Have disabled Superfetch.
have disabled windows search
have disabled Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Have disabled hibernate in power settings.
Have followed all steps here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhhDtOHaOrY
ZZYnx. We are running a different driver. We are running iaStorA.sys
I have done all changes as per ZZynx two links.
It is not a solid state drive.

All of these combined seem to have fixed the issue.
Each step until the you tube video did not individually rectify the issue.

I have done all changes as per ZZynx two links.
And what about turning off "show me tips about Windows."?

All of these combined seem to have fixed the issue.
Great!

Spoke to soon. It is now running consistently at 100% again.

What's in your task manager?
The author posted that already.

Again: name at least three files it is mostly reading/writing to, so that we get an idea about what is going on.
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

Yes it is a laptop.
Disconnecting from the internet did not have an affect.
The air vents are on the side, but I put on a small book as suggested and it did not have an affect.
We don't have any scheduled scans etc running.
I don't have the options you have shown in your screen shot. we are using windows 10.

The process system and compressed memory seems to be one of the main causes.
nobus

you can check your temperatures better with speedfan : http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

no books needed    :-)
McKnife

"The process system and compressed memory seems to be one of the main causes" - well, that has no meaning. What files are those reading on/writing to - that is important.

As I wrote: "For diagnosis, in start menu, type resmon. Resource monitor can list which files the disk is reading and writing mostly. Report those."
I started with Experts Exchange in 2004 and it's been a mainstay of my professional computing life since. It helped me launch a career as a programmer / Oracle data analyst

Instead of changing settings at random, you really might want to consider following McKnife's suggestion to use resmon to see what files are getting hit with all that disk activity.

Just look on the Overview tab in Disk Use tab, and it'll show you file with highest activity.  Expand to full screen to see all columns.

Post what you see.

I know you said here>
again, what about turning off "show me tips about Windows."?
Did you turned that off too?
~>Yes this has been turned off.
try this instead
Right click the start bar -> Click "Properties"
Click "Customize" next to 'Notification Area:'
Slide all bars to "Off" in the 'Notifications' category
nobus

your temperatures seem normal
i assume you have installed all drivers for the laptop?
if not, try updating them

The Hard Drive ended up dying.
Had the Supplier come and and review the situation.
He said the hard drive had degraded in a very short time.
He also made note about the notifications causing issues in windows 10.
Sorry for the delay, but this was only fixed a couple of days ago.
Merete

Great :)
