USB Drive emmulator ?
Say, I'm looking to have a DVR Write-it data files through a USB port attached. This is a very simple DVR and to my knowledge, does not offer a way to access the data on its hard drive. The only way is to connect in a USB drive to the USB port.
My thinking is to connect a USB cable from the USB port directly into a regular PC (OS XP). A software driver would be required to emulate a USB hard drive on this port. The DVR would then effectively be writing to a hard drive, partition, on the PC but this would be accessible. Do you have any suggestions?

Yes to have access at the same time. Can you suggest such an entry level device available in South Africa - never heard of it. Would we connect to it with a network cable?
For example Western Digital WD TV Media Player, like this:
http://www.wdc.com/en/prod ucts/produ cts.aspx?i d=1270
It costs less than $200 new, but i'm not sure if they sell it in south africa (I'm european, sorry) the WD website doesn't seem to indicate that they sell products there, so I'm not sure.
Another such device is the GigaTV http://tvtech.es/prod/elec tronics-me dia-gigatv
Basically this devices are a combination of an external HD, with a DLNA or WiFi connection to share the multimedia content, so you could access it from a PC via WiFi.
But you might have to check this devices on your country. Look for "DLNA HDDs" or "HD TV" or "Multimedia HDD".

Tx. The WD device I found seems end of life.

Is there a newer model?
These devices support video out.
What about a device for sharing mp3 files with a USB and LAN port? Is there such?
When you search add "south Africa" to string pls

tx. What about my suggestion above of File Share device as should be cheaper??
Well, in that case you could use a NAS, it's relatively cheap, and you can save MP3 o MP4, etc and then share it via LAN.
You can use a small/old NAS or build your own using a PC with software like FreeNAS.

-Is it because you need to access the disk at the same time as the DVR??? In which case, you could use a media player HD to have access to the files via DLNA, for example.
