VMware - how to Expand a Virtual Hard Disk in a Virtual Machine

Guys,
I need to expand a virtual hard drive in my Windows Server 2012 R2 Server.
The drive is configured using GPT and the current size is 5TB.
My VM is running on VMware vSphere 6.0

I found the following article to do this:
https://pubs.vmware.com/workstation-9/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.ws.using.doc%2FGUID-73BEB4E6-A1B9-41F4-BA37-364C4B067AA8.html

But I don't understand 2 of the prerequisites:

"Verify that the virtual disk is not mapped or mounted."
This is prerequisite number 2, prerequisite number one was to power off the VM, of course.
Question: If the VM has been powered off, how can the virtual hard drive be mapped or mounted?

"Verify that the virtual machine has no snapshots."
This is prerequisite number 3.
Question: The golden rule before making any change to the VM is to first make sure you create a snapshot, how can they say that I need to actually delete all my snapshots?
If I delete my snapshots then how can I backup my VM at least just for this once?

So, is this article correct?
Is this article the way to do this?

Thanking you in advance,
Cargex.

I don't have backup software in place at the moment.
How can I make a "manual"  full backup of a virtual machine?
You start a Manual Backup Job using your backup software.

How do you backup your VMs ?

It's your risk, if you make changes to production VMs, without having any backups.

Ok, before expanding the disk I will look in to VEEAM free version, I think that will be enough for now.

Thanks.
