snmp trap messages

We have a system that receives alarms (snmp traps).  When we connect a a laptop to a switch an alarm gets generated:
example:   link down  "fasethernet0/05  down".  The problem is that the alarm is showing as "critical" and we like to change it to "info". I have not work with these traps in unix. Can someone provide some help  to get this done.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Link down is a critical event

The difficulty is the critical categorization is likely configurable on your event display

You haven't specified the software treating the traps, nagios maybe?

Basically, you change the monitoring alerts on the sofware portion, not the SNMP, which is considered hardware.
