Pinging a machine with WOL enabled
Sometimes I notice machines that appear to be off in some aspects on the network but are actually still pingable.
What differences in ping if any would a person who has come from an environment where WOL is not used to environment where wake on LAN is used locally and all machines are set to use it?

So it is true by what you're saying but a computer that is turned off in a wake on LAN environment or wake on LAN is in play would respond to a ping request?
If a computer does not respond to a ping request in a wake on LAN environment then is wake on LAN possibly not enabled on that computer or some other problem?

Yes. I see. I see now that I am barking up the wrong tree. I am doing some work in a network that I'm normally not in and I was told that wake on LAN was configured on every computer. I also see that some computers that are turned off respond to ping request when they are off and others do not. I will look into these additional settings.
I was looking at the differences and did not think about anything other then wake on LAN as being a player. Thank you

Also, maybe by keeping the ping alive, it might keep the DHCP address assigned, depending on length of DHCP lease.
WOL would be nice to save power, and access a computer when needed, or when scheduled services are required at night. Also, increases security of workstations.
Maybe the computers have Intel AMT? There is a setting to turn OFF 'Respond to Ping' in the Intel AMT settings. If un-checked, the computer will not respond to ping.
