Windows Home Server Backup fails

Hi all,

I'm having some issues with WHS 2011 backup, and the error description is really vague. Can anyone shed some light on this message:

Hi, thank you, but I'm not sure if that's the issue. the backups ran fine before, and this is a recent occurrence. And the other partitions on the same drive seem to back up ok. It only fails when it tries to backup the D: drive:

So what I notice is that it doesn't fail right away with the D: drive. It goes to about 4%, then fails.

Does this help?

I'd like to try the chkdsk option next, but I don't want to blunder. Should I be answering "Y" to these questions? Sorry about the newbie questions.

Yes, select Yes. Then you will need to restart the server. Or if you stop access to this drive then it should run in Windows.
I will try and report back.
Well, the chkdsk did not work.

Here is the Event Log (I hope I did this correctly):

I should note that the WD Red backup drive is in an external housing, connected via USB.

It's strange. I can login, but after a second attempt. it's rather random.
I'm going to attach another hard drive and try the backup.
Ok
Hi - it fails with the same error msg. At this point, I doubt this makes any difference, but the backup drive is external - connected via USB2.

I'm probably going to swap out the server.

If backup fails with different storage as well then problem is in backup source. In other words the D drive itself.
We need to look into backup log.
Can you give me specific instructions on how to pull up that log? Thanks.

The server is behaving quite strangely. Random reboots, etc. I'm just going to swap it out.

I cannot thank you enough for your help. You are truly one of the best experts on this site. I'm going to close out this question, but do you want me to post the log anyway?
Yes, post it please. Maybe it contains enough valuable information which would help you/us in future.
Ok - I will try. right now, I can't even reach it remotely. Through some poking around, I think the hang-up is when I try to try up the WHS 2011 client backup files.

I'll report back. Thanks again.
Ok, here's more info:

Should we try emptying the Recycle Bin?
Yes, that's first thing we need to do. If this does not help then the recycle bin is corrupt.
OK - I've emptied the Recycle Bin and will try another backup. If that does not work, I'll manually empty with:

rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin from the Command Prompt.

Assuming the Recycle Bin is corrupted, does that imply that the OS hard drive has physical errors?
It can be that D drive file system has problems because a recycle bin is a part of a file system.
You can delete the recycle bin and recvreate it again. Once you've deleted it right click on a desktop and select Personalize.
Then click on Desktop Icons and select a Recycle Bin checkbox. Click ok. The recycle bin should be recreated.
None of these solutions seem to be helping. It's time to replace the computer. This computer has had a history of problems (I had to replace the CPU at one point). Random reboots, user profiles getting corrupted, etc. At this point, I think it's safe to assume it's not just a hard drive or software - it has to be motherboard related.

I cannot thank you enough! If I could give you 10,000 points, I would.
Ok, thanks for your cooperation!
Have a nice day and take care.
