"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Well, I'll ask the obvious question:  Are you an admin on the Mac?

Assuming you are, I would:
-  Download a fresh copy of Firefox
-  Trash the old one
-  Install the new one

yes I am the only user and admin.  How do I trash the old one and will I lose anything?

Odd, do you have problems updating other applications as well or just this one?
CompTIA Network+

Prepare for the CompTIA Network+ exam by learning how to troubleshoot, configure, and manage both wired and wireless networks.

just this one.

You could setup sync under FireFox - Preferences. When synced, drag FireFox from Applications to Trash and reinstall. Once reinstalled, enable sync again to get all your settings, history etc. back.

You shouldn't lose anything; your profile should be safe in your user library.  To be sure, you can copy your profile to the Desktop as a precaution.
