is the ram compatible?
i have a Z170M-PLUS board - Asus
i also have a 16 GB stickKVR21R15D4/16
Question is that ram compatible with the board? (it is not on the Asus QVL list)
here the QVL which shows 4 and 8 GB sticks from Kingston :

That is almost exactly what happens with the system I have. The CPU fan spins but the system never boots. After tireless hours with Asus support it was determined that the RAM I was trying to use, while "correct" in spec was not going to work on that board. They referred me to the QVL and I purchased RAM from it.
I know that's what worked for that machine and I'm fairly confident that will work for the machine I'm waiting on the RAM for. Hoping that someone has the same motherboard and RAM combination coupled with them being a member on here...you could be waiting a while :) but hey, stranger things happen haha.

For a test, you could always either buy the lowest amount that will boot for a RAM that's on the QVL and try it. Maybe you could re-use it in another system or just leave it in and see if it takes it on top...
Do you get any "beeps" when you power it on?
Does that change with/without the memory module installed?
I'd be inclined to buy a 4GB DDR4 module just to have handy for testing this exact kind of situation -- a quality Crucial or Kingston 4GB module is only ~ $20, and you can get others for even less.

... in fact, I just realized that with the spare memory I have "laying around" everything from Long-ago SDRAM modules to DDR, DDR2, DDR3 in both desktop and SODIMM form factors, I don't have a single spare DDR4 module !! Guess I need to follow my own advice :-)

no beeps with or without ram
the fans start and stop by using the power switch

That is the same thing the one I have with incorrect RAM does. The fan spins but never any POST beeps or attempt to boot.

i'll check if the pc shop can test with other ram on monday
ASKER
still no result

result : ram = not compatible
bought compatible one
does everybody agree that there was no solution given ?
then i will proceed to delete this Q - or do you want to close it in another way ?

I disagree as I mentioned several times that the memory was most likely not compatible as well as gave suggestions on tests to perform.
ASKER
well - that was my question - but nobody said it is compatible or not
they only sayd "maybe" - - i did not need to ask a Q to know that, as you can readily see from the Original post, i even said it was not in the QVL
as for tests - i did not see them, at least that you can do without other hardware
let's wait for others what they have to say

i won't argue - though i t hink that no real good answer came out here -

anybody knows how to get a list with compatible motherboards for that ram ?
"... anybody knows how to get a list with compatible motherboards for that ram ? " ==> No, I don't think there's any likelihood of such a list. It's hard enough to get a QVL ... this requires a manufacturer to buy and test every module they're going to certify -- at least they can keep a supply of the modules they've purchased and use them to test other boards ==> but for a RAM manufacturer to buy EVERY motherboard that uses that specific type of RAM to test it would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming.
ASKER
i thought so Gary
But since i have this ram lying idle - it would be interesting to come up with a couple of compatible boards - that's all

ASKER
only the cpu fan starts up - no disk or other devices attached
and i have no spares, or compatible parts
i even bought a new 600 W PS (tested first on another mobo)
any options left to try / test ?
of course if anybody has this mobo - or ram and can confirm either way - that would be best
