How to restore a wordpress site?

HI guys,
We have noticed that one of our websites has been attacked with malware so the hosting company requested "reinstall" wordpress and upload a new clean version of the content.

Considering that I am not an expert on wordpress some questions come to my mind:

1. Would you mind to bring a step by step guide of how to create a new wordpress site?
2. Can you please tell me how to backup the the current site and then how to restore it on the new and clean version?

Thanks!

Julian, if I perform the new installation on a subdirectory wouldn't be possible to get infected by the main site?

I'm afraid that I've never installed a WordPress site start from scratch, would you mind to recommend a step by step guide to do that?

Julian, what do you think about the following?

1. Make and download a full backup of the infected site.
2. Delete all the files in the public html directory.
3. Upload a new installation of the website.
4. Upload the updated version of plugins and themes.
5. Restore the backed up database.
6. Make the final configurations.

The idea is to avoid as much as possible get infected again.

I just tried to get into wp-admin to make the backup as you proposed but I am afraid I am not able to do that any more, seems that the malware infection has completely damaged the site, so I wonder how can I know what themes and plugins should I install again? are those specified inside some folder?

I am NOT a WP guru, but I have had some experience working with various wordpress sites.  I have found, through bitter experience, that the best protection is an excellent backup routine.  I use
BackupBuddy.  It doesn't have the overhead of many free plugins and does the scheduled backups for you.  BB is relatively easy to set up and use and has security builtin (not as good as full blown security products but better than most).  The support is excellent as well.
