Installing RDS role on Server 2012 R2

Hello,

I have been trying to install RDS on a Windows Server 2012 R2 for the past day without any success. I have been kicking off the install via Server Manager (local and remote) using the RDS Installation type and using the Quick Start, Session based deployment to install all roles on the single box.

At first, I would receive the error that the server had a pending reboot waiting. After bouncing the box several times, I eventually deleted this key from the registry: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

This then enabled me to get through to confirmation process and begin the install. But whenever it starts the install, it fails at the first step, installing Connection Broker and ends the process. I also notice that in server manager it flags that it could not start the services it is attempting to install.

I have also attempted installation on another box via PowerShell without any success.

Both servers are VMs running on ESX 5.1.

Is there anything obvious that I am doing causing the issue? Or anything I am missing? I hope I made some sense.

Thanks
Gary

Hi Om,

Thank you for your comment.

Yes I am aware of this guide. I am afraid it does nothing to get me past the issue with installing the roles however.

Regards,
Gary
The fact that you had to delete a pending file rename tells me that the server was already in an unhealthy state. I'd honestly just start over with a clean OS install.

Expert pointed me in the right direction and further troubleshooting by myself found the root cause of the issue.
VMware
VMware

VMware, a software company founded in 1998, was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies. VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture. Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
