in response to nobus, the cd does not read any disks, and I also tried deleting the device driver, and then going into a reboot, but windows failed to install thedriver for the CD.  thus, I am at a lost.  I have been trying to get the original driver fromn the lennovo site, but without any success.  thus, I am lost.

Two things to try:

1. Go into the system BIOS and ensure that the device is detected and enabled there and set up as a standard DVD/CD etc. If BIOS cannot see it, the drive is likely defective.

2. Power down the computer. Take the cover off, disconnect the power and data cables (both ends) and inspect the pins and connectors. Then plug them back in and try again, staring with BIOS this time.

Try Norm's suggestion above. The drivers for DVD / CD are part of the operating system and not on the Vendor's site. The Vendor (Lenovo here) sometimes has add-on software for DVD but there was none for your model, and, in any event, such add-ons are not DVD drivers.

it looks like a bad drive to me
test if you can boot from a bootable cd - or DVD
dvd = windows install dvd
cd, something like ubcd here :  (nice to have around for testing)
Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD
---------------------------------------------------
go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

**  you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick
*** note *** for SSD drives  use the tool from the manufacturer, like intel 's toolbox :
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18455/Intel-Solid-State-Drive-Toolbox

for completeness -here's how i handle disk problems : https://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Hard_Drives/A_3000-The-bad-hard-disk-problem.html

Lenovo M72e has a slim box DVD as do laptops, so unless your confident to replace it, you will need to seek service to replace the bad DVD drive.
In response to dbrunton, I ran the utility, but have no clue on what to make out of its report which is attached.  could u please take a look before I pronounce the cd, dead beyond local and economical repair.  thank u

Sorry, don't know what that is.

Have you tried the following suggestion (copy and paste from above)

Two things to try:

1. Go into the system BIOS and ensure that the device is detected and enabled there and set up as a standard DVD/CD etc. If BIOS cannot see it, the drive is likely defective.

2. Power down the computer. Take the cover off, disconnect the power and data cables (both ends) and inspect the pins and connectors. Then plug them back in and try again, starting with BIOS this time.

And thirdly, have you tried booting from a bootable CD?  (This one will tell you if your drive is functional or not).
I have been trying to download the UBCD but am getting so many redirects that it is so scary esp from one who is just recovering from a virus attack.  If anyone has a direct link to the download for windows 10 version, where I will install onto my pc, hope u can pse share with me. thank u

Best torrent it if the sites are giving you too many redirects.  Use Tixati http://www.tixati.com/download/ for your Torrent downloader   I don't recommend any other Torrent downloader.  Install Tixati and then left click on the magnet link on http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html (half way down the page), choose Tixati and let it download the ISO file.

Note.  It isn't a Windows 10 version of the UBCD but an ISO file.  You burn it to CD and then you can boot from it.  If you need help with that then ask.

If you are getting redirects and stuff you may still have malware on your system.  Try the following applications

AdwCleaner http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
Combofix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/ (not for Windows 10)
JRT http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/

Malwarebytes http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/
Are you certain that you are no longer infected?

Storage

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.
