Gmail sync problems with Apple Mail and 10.9.5

The user has complained that email appears on the iPhone but not on the Mail program.  Their solution is to restart the computer, and then the missing messages appear.

This is an iMac with Mac OS X 10.9.5    It is set to never go to sleep.  They often leave it on 24 hour a day.

Yesterday I ran "MainMenu Pro" which, among other things, cleans caches, checks the mail index, runs Mac OS X maintenance.
I just switched on "Enable Power Nap"  But I would think that if it is set to never sleep that the Power Nap wouldn't matter.

Any other advice?  Thanks
