Comcast - do you have to supply the modem? What's the best one to use?
A friend has a 10 year old modem with his internet service with Comcast. I suggested he call and see if he can get a new one from them.
He said they told him to go buy one.
a) does that sound right? They don't supply the modem? They go for $200! or so.
b) What's a good one for comcast? He said they mentioned Arris tg862g but not sure if there's better ones.
c) is there an all in one that works with comcast? modem and router?
d) is getting it going easy? Just give them the mac address?

You will want to get a new one. Mine is about two years old and it supports their highest speeds (along with the Boost option). I get 130Mbps download and about 12Mbps upload now. The only way I could get faster service is to open shop in one of the industrial parks that already has fiber installed.
My ISP charges me $4 (and rebates me $4). The cost is nominal, and they own / replace it when necessary. They can hook into the modem and determine problems at their end. There is more to these things than saving $20.

Yes, I think he was 'renting'. I know for me, it's built into the cost of FIOS. Don't know if I'd save anything if I said I have my own.
Check this out / can someone shed light on this:
He said he's getting the NetGear AC1750 and that best buy says 'its compatible' with Comcast.
When I google NetGear AC1750, I get 2 different looking things - 1 is a stand up modem router combination... and then a flat looking router. Both have the same AC1750 number.
I know they need the vertical one that talks of a modem. but isn't that a bit weird?
