If the wizard does not recognize it as a valid backup then you cannot restore it with restore wizard. Try to mount the vhd file if the backup via Windows Disk Management and export the necessary files.

the backup is an image of sbs2011 and as such i am under the impression that although it will mount, its not bootable as a virtual machine?<br />

The backup that has been created is a full and complete backup. Is there no way to figure out why its not been recognised as a backup file?<br />

/does anyone know of anyway to mount it successfully as a virtual machine?

You cannot mount it as a virtual machine, but you can restore it to a virtual machine using third party backup tool.<br />
Or you can mount it as a slave drive in your Windows as I noted above.<br />
The MS backup tool is pretty limited and does not provide much information about its health.

1. Ill install windows 2012 on the server<br />
2. Create a Hyper-V machine on it...<br />
3. What third party tool can you recommend to restore the backup to the hyper-v instance?<br />

Look how I did restore a Windows 7 machine from Windows backup file using Paragon Backup &amp;&nbsp;Recovery 15. Attached is a video file which is already packed into player. I changed the .exe extension of the file to .png so that I could upload it here. Download it and change the extension back to .exe and double click on it. See the video. <br />
For the server OS you could need server compatible version. Like Hard Disk Manager 15 Business: <a href="https://www.paragon-software.com/small-business/hdm-business/" rel="ugc">https://www.paragon-software.com/small-business/hdm-business/</a><br />
You will need to create an empty VM with HDD big enough to restore the image. Once the restore is done - use P2P Adjust OS. <br />
The whole process is done from a WinPE Recovery CD for Hard Disk Manager/B&amp;R15Home.<br />

Right click on attached file and select Save Link as - and show location where to save. Just tried it in FireFox and it worked.

It looks like im going to have to restore exchange from the log files as the edb file is showing zero bytes.<br />
<br />
Do you have any suggestions for a program that will go from logs files to pst?<br />

When we launch from the sbs2011 media and get to the point of selecting the image to restore the backup process is not seeing the files as a backup image and so says no backup found<br />
<br />
If i plug the disk into a computer I can see\browse the windows backup image. No files have been changed on it although i didnt think we should be able to browse the files like we can, so maybe a permissions issue?<br />
<br />
The end goal is we need to get the emails from this back up, so any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.<br />
