localhost = HTTP Error 404
I have installed Windows 7 freshly in VMware as Homegroup. Turned off Firewall , no Antivirus installed yet, windows Defender turned off.
yet localhost does not show in browser. Instead it shows 'HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found'.
I have enabled the 'Windows Features'
IIS / Web Management console and ISAPI Extensions , ISAPI Filters

What is the default document you are using? index.html, default.html, start.htm, index.aspx...
Can you post the content of the default site folder? Typically in:
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\

agreed with Dan, first check the setting for default home page and make sure the corresponding file is available.
in addition, check the NTFS permissions of the given files to make sure web users can access the page anonymously.
