recommended alternatives to truecrypt
what are some of the recommended alternatives to truecrypt? Are these alternatives able to open past truecrypt files?

For good advice, we'd need to know how you used it so far and why you chose it. It could be that we'd find reasons not to recommend certain alternatives, then. See also my comment with a list of questions in the linked thread.
Just a note that if you will want to open existing TC files which I supposed you meant the TC containers. The "candidates" (two that I stated earlier) will reuse the TC codebase i.e. using the same TC codes. So if you are looking at replacement due to internal security audit concerns, then it will remains and not addressed your concern.
Otherwise, most of the candidate for file/folder or container based will need to do some sort of conversion of the format (decrypt TC container and move data to new candidate "container") to get back the data. Importantly make sure you have your backup verified working before such migration of data.

On linux there is LUKS. (integrated into the kernel, and boot coding for some distro's).

Veracrypt is a good alternative and user friendly to use
