Window 10 upgrade gone wrong

User's son upgraded windows 8.1 to windows 10.  User moved his files to the new desktop.  User rebooted the machine and machine updated and files were gone.  User tried to go back to windows 8.1 to find files and files are gone.  Is there an undelete program that actually works to find the deleted files?  Also, user is in a remote location so I don't have access to the physical machine only remotely

Your description needs clarifications. Based on it, the machine was upgraded, files moved, then it was updated and files are gone.  An update does not do anything to files. More likely it sounds the user has moved some files, didn't find them afterwards and thought "let's go back to 8.1 and find them there" - which will not work.

So clear that up, tell him an update does not move files and he needs to remember where he put those. If he doesn't and there's no backup, yes, then undelete programs need to be consulted. a free one is "test disk".
