Permissions issue on some folders on network drive - Mac OS

A client of ours has reported a problem today. They have a NAS that serves their Macs.

They have a folder called MAIN\ALL IMAGES\{folder}\{folder}\ I have replaced some identifiable names with {folder}

There are 45 images in there and they are accessible by the boss, but the others who connect to the share as the generic company login just see them grey.

I looked at the permissions from the boss' Mac under Get Info and at the bottom it just says 'You have custom access'.

I have tried chown from the terminal but that hasn't helped.

I got round it in the end by copying the folder that contains the photos to Main\ and that allows the photos to be used normally by everyone.

It looks like some extra permissions are there somehow. The issue we have is that we took over the support of the company from another company and the logon credentials for the Synology NAS weren't among the info we got so if is needs anything done that end it could be painful. I doubt the boss remembers her password and it is stored in her keychain for use on her Mac.

Any thoughts people?

Hi Allisolve,

It sounds like the folders are on the NAS instead of the bosses Mac, so please go to the folder on the server and make sure that all users (who need access) have it. Once they are allowed access with the correct permissions to the folder, then have them (if they are on Macs) access it by pressing CMD + K and enter "smb://PutFilePathHere"

Lastly, to make it easier for them to access the drive everyday, open up System Preferences/Users & Groups/Highlight user/ click "Login items" tab/drag and drop the mounted drive inside the window.

Hope this helps.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately as I said in my question, it would be a pain to get into the NAS. Not necessarily impossible, but a pain.

There is only one share on the NAS and other folders aren't suffering from this issue so as far as I can see, the permissions are scrambled either on the NAS or from the boss' Mac.

I think I am going to have to get on the NAS to reset the permissions in any case, but I am just hoping for a little magic that will mean I don't have to to be honest!
Hi Allisolve,

Sorry, I didn't mean to misread your question. However, the only other legitimate way of accessing the folder is to bind with AD (you won't need Thursby or any 3rd party software to do this).  Go to System Preferences / Users & Groups/ Login Options/ Click "Join" next to Network Account Server/ Put in AD domain/ Put in AD User & Pass info/ Click Ok/

The rest is better read at this Techrepublic article: Link (since you may, or may not need more than what I have given you).

Hope this helps.
Hi Justin,

No worries, thanks again for replying.

There is no Active Directory. It is just a Synology NAS box with file sharing. There are user permissions, but it isn't a domain. Am I misunderstanding you now?

It is looking more and more like I am going to have to try to log in to the NAS box :-(
Hi Allisolve,

Lol. I'm batting a thousand here. =) I should've asked what type of environment you were in. That said, here is an article (usually I'm not the "article guy" type, but for time purposes it should help speed things up) Link

Most likely you won't be able to ignore ownership, but the last paragraphs (4-11) should get you up and running.

Let me know how things go.
