Hyper-V virtual switch setup

I'm trying to configure Hyper-V on a Dell T430 using the provided virtual hard disc and virtual machine in the import wizard. prior to setting up the VM I have configured the virtual switch to use one of the two on board NIC ports. I selected external network and de-selected the option to allow the management operating system to share the network adapter. After configuring the VM I have connectivity on the Host OS but not in the VM. The error message is "not connected - No connections are available" when I hover over the network icon in the system tray.

I have verified that both Ethernet cables are good. I can connect from either NIC port (after deleting the virtual switch) from the Host OS. I have tried configuring the virtual switch on NIC 1 and NIC 2 with the same result.
