PC won't shutdown, results in error 6608

Hi there,

I've searched and searched but all to no avail. I built a PC a couple of months back and the last few weeks I've had this really annoying problem occurring randomly, but more often. I use the PC, go to shut it down  (start > shutdown), but can also be a restart, same effect, Windows does it's shutdown, monitor turns off, then the fans speed up to max for a split second then back down to 'normal', but the PC never actually shuts down. The PC stays on, fans running, all LED's on, graphics card and WiFi card still powered up, and it never, however long I leave it properly powers off.

I have tried everything including BIOS settings to no avail.

I checked last night and even though Windows appears to have completely shut down before it 'hangs', Event Viewer shows error 6608, an unexpected shutdown occurred. I was surprised by this as I always thought that Windows had fully shut down by this point.

The PC is as follows:
- Intel i5 6600K
- Asus Z170A mobo
- Corsair Vengeance 3000mhz DDR4 RAM
- GTX970 graphics card
- TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 N900 WiFi card
- EVGA Super NOVA 850W PSU

This issue does not happen every time, I can use the PC for a short time browsing the web etc and it doesn't seem to happen so much, but after a gaming session it's pretty much guaranteed to happen.

If anyone has any ideas it'd be much appreciated as I am stumped and it is very very annoying.

Many thanks,
Tom

Have you checked that you have the newest BIOS installed? Have you downloaded and installed the newest drivers from ASUS?

Hi Rindi,

Yes newest BIOS and drivers, though this was happening on the last version of BIOS and older drivers also.
Then make check the heatsink is properly and firmly attached to the CPU. Also clean off all thermal transfer paste from both the CPU and heatsink, then apply only a very small drop of fresh thermal transfer paste to the CPU and reattach the heatsink.
I know this won't exactly replicate the gaming part you think might be causing it but try booting up with Knoppix....http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html.

Play some of the built-in games, surf, etc.  Then try to shutdown.  If it does shut down on a consistent basis, then you'll most likely know it isn't hardware/BIOS settings and possibly something with the OS.

If you do see the shutdown issue, then you can start looking at individual pieces of hardware.

Try pulling memory one stick at a time.
@Rindi - I have a Corsair watercooler on the CPU, it came with thermal paste already applied, was just a case of seating it. My CPU temps never go above 40/45c, is there a reason other than the CPU getting hot you recommend this?

@ScottCha - I'll give that a go, as for the memory stick, I haven't tried that so I'll give that a go.
Many people apply far too much paste, which causes the opposite effect than the one needed, optimal cooling.

The RAM you should test using memtest86+, that is better than trying. Memtest86+ is included with most Linux Distro's as one of the options in the boot menu, probably also with knoppix.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll try these out.

For anyone else with this potential issue, I've been digging a little deeper, and another thing people seem to be having success is downgrading the  Intel Management Engine;
"I'd like to confirm that downgrading the Intel Management Engine Interface driver to version 9.5 (from version 11.0) solved the problem. My laptop could neither shut down, restart, or wake from sleep properly before that."

I know that I downloaded Intel(R) Management Engine Interface V11.0.0.1172 from the ASUS site so I'll try that out too.

I will try all these and report either way.
what OS are you using?
ihave a z170M - no problems like that
Hi Nobus, I'm using Windows 10 64-bit.

I couldn't downgrade the Intel Management Engine Interface driver from V11.0.0.1172, but I did grab a newer version, V11.0.2.1000.

I haven't had much chance to properly test anything yet, but since upgrading it hasn't repeated the issue, fingers crossed when I get a bit more time to play around I can say with some conviction this has/n't solved it.
ok we'll see
