asked on

how to backup using Apple time machine?

I have a MacBook pro and an iMac.  I would like to back up both devices by way of making a system image?  How does one make a system image using time machine?  The reason I ask is that the literature/guides associated with time machine promote incremental backups ad infinitum.

Perhaps there is another piece of software that is better with making a system image for Apple computers?  Do you know of any?
thanks,

I prefer to use Clonezilla. It's free and does a great job. We use it for deploying thousands of machines.
The software in my opinion is easy to use and wicked fast. (I created an image of a 500gb drive in 10 minutes)

You can make a clone of your hard drive using the built-in Disk Utility. Other options are Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com and SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

Most Mac users use Carbon Copy Cloner. With Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper, you can clone the disk you are booted from. DiskUtility requires you to boot from a separate volume, for instance the Recovery Partition.

I am a little confused re the word clone versus the word image.  On a PC I can easily make an image of my computer on an external drive using Easus to do backup and then I create a boot disk that can be used to restore the image if necessary.

I have used SuperDuper for years, the free version will clone a boot drive to another hard drive, partition, or disk image in about 45 minutes. (depending on the data size, interface, and device)
I am also a fan of the Take Control books - https://www.takecontrolbooks.com/
There is a Backup manual by Joe Kissell - https://www.takecontrolbooks.com/jot-backing-up

Apple OS

Apple's early computers ran on a variety of operating systems, including a Pascal version and one based on CP/M, before releasing its ProDOS with the advent of its 16-bit computer. With the release of the Lisa, which had its own OS, Apple and computing entered the graphical age; it was followed by the Macintosh, which offered a series of "System" operating systems. Other Mac operating systems included PowerPC until Apple acquired NeXT and folded it into the Mac OS. Current operating systems for Apple devices are Mac OS-X and iOS.
