Lync 2010 Install - Simple

Hello.

Needing to install Lync Server Standard (2010, we are utilizing Office 2010 at this time) to provide solution for Instant Messaging.   Small organization - single domain, will end up utilizing on maybe 20 - 25 users.  Looks like I can install all the server components on one server?   I'm probably making more of this than I should I just don't have the opportunity to install in a lab environment so I want to be fairly clear going in.    Is this a simple install?   I am going to spin up a new VM for this.
Any advice, links, notes, would be appreciated.

Thanks

yeah lync is pretty simple to set up , integrates well with office and exchange obviously.

standard version of lync will be fine , it supports up to 5000 users according to m$ ... your 25-30 will be fine.

you need to have an AD-DC set up, running dns and security certificates set up. I don't know if you have an onsite exchange server but the requirements for lync are very very similar to exchange and it will go easily on the same server with your low user count.

Why lync 2010? u have skype for business similar to lync in installation and hardware requirements and number of servers..

You can collocate all the services on Lync or skype front end server but in lync 2010 u cant collocate monitoring and archiving roles unlike skype for business and/or lync 2013.

For remote connectivity u need edge server. for lync/ skype mobility you will need reverse proxy server or firewall.

Thanks Jamie and Mohammed.
Couple of comments.  Not looking to do anything external - only using for internal IM.

We have mostly Office 2010 installed so that is why I chose Lync 2010.  Can I use Lync 2013?  Is there a cost to skype for business?  Trying to keep costs minimal.

Do I need a certificate authority server?  Have not done this before. Is it difficult?

Thanks!
You can use ur office 2010's lync 2010 client with lync 2013 and skype for business too..

and yes u will need local Certification authority or else lync services wont start..

you can visit y website for deployment guide of skype for business standard ..

Can I load th CA on this same server as Lync 2013?  Is Skype for Business different from Lync 2013 and is there a cost?
I am not sure to be honest if the cost is different but even if it is different it wont be that much different than lync 2010 or 2013 .

And yes you can install CA on the front end server as well. it's very tiny server.
Here they write about the price of S4B server note that you only need license for the Registrar server which is the Front end generally in Lync/S4B. and then you'd need the end user license (CAL)

OK so what servers do you run on your network right now? I'm assuming you have at least one server set up as the active directory domain controller? that will usually have your Dns server on it too... if you have an SBS version of the server OS, then you'll have exchange on it too probably. Exchange will have security certification already set up on it (allocated to smtp , imap, pop, and iis) and that's all your requisites ticked for whatever version you go for.

lync 2010 - 2013 or skype4business -
both have similar check lists for the set up

-ad-DC
-Dns server
-security certification with valid certs... either self-signed or bought from trusted CA authority.
We actually have 3 AD DC servers, running DNS, also a separate exchange 2010 server.  just looking to add this Lync server to allow for Instant Messaging.

(Maybe I understood Jambon316's comment wrong) but no I don't personally recommend that you install Lync FE on Exchange.

Lync FE (FrontEnd) itself uses at least 5-6GB of RAM and 20GB of disk space that's upon installation of the standard edition. Once you enable users that will consume more space and more ram resources..

I would rather dedicate a special server for Front end.
there is absolutely no point installing the front end version. it's only being used internally and for about 30 users. M$ recommend the standard version for this amount of users, if you were to install front end , you'd need to add it and host it linked to a schema on a sql server. so then it would be split over 2 servers, for no point at all. even allowing for a massive user base
increase in the future - there is still no need for the front end and sql enterprise level version.

the standard version linc installs via a friendly wizard interface to a single server, it shares a lot of settings with exchange, and fits in well with it.most settings during installation will populate for you.
No that's not correct, Standard edition of Lync/Skype4B supports up to 5000 users on the SQL Express version.

I am not sure where are you getting your information from?

The Enterprise edition supports up to 80,000 users with 12 Front end server.
What version of Lync Server do you own now? Any? If you own Lync 2010, then go with it. Install a Standard server on a single server. Just install it and then follow the steps in the deployment wizard. If you do not own it yet, I would go with SFB. Installs the same way. Do not put in on an Exchange server if you can help it. Just complicates things if anything goes wrong.
Thanks everyone.  Installed on a separate server and all went fine.
