Windows server licensing question

I have 3 servers in the office, one is a 2008 Small Business Server, one is a 2008 R2 server with SQL Server 2008 R2 and one is a Server 2012 R2.
I know we need some extra 2008 Small Business Server user cals but I am a bit confused about the other licensing requirements.
When we bought the server with SQL we bought 10 cals for the server and 10 cals for SQL, if we say have an additional 10 users since then do we need to purchase another 10 SQL licenses and 10 server licenses (in addition to the extra Small Business licences I know we need).
Also, for the new 2012 server which will be hosting a bespoke software application, do we need cals for this server as well?

Thanks for any help... :)

You didn't say how many users you HAVE.

SBS 2008 CALs cover access to all 2008 and SHOULD cover access to 2008 R2 (since the "R2" designation was in part to signify that 2008 CALs were sufficient).  So your 2008 R2 server should never have needed WINDOWS CALs.

Your 2012 Server is much newer than 2008/2008 and all users who use ANY ASPECT of the server require Windows 2012 CALs.  Meaning, if you made this your DHCP server then ALL users using a device that gets a DHCP address needs a 2012 CAL.

Your SQL install needs SQL CALs as well.

It would be easier to provide assistance if we knew:
How many SBS Users
How many SQL Users
How many Users access ANYTHING on the 2012 server.

ASKER

Hi, appreciate your assistance...
total of 30 users all accessing DC roles on SBS2008 and SQL on 2008R2.
As yet no one connecting to the 2012 but envisage about 8 initally.

Thanks
Andy
