Moving ESXi Host Between Clusters

I just need to verify this before moving the host to the new cluster.

1. I created a new cluster under the same datacenter and I will enable HA to this new cluster. Should I have to enable HA first or do I have to move the host first before enabling HA?

 2. Moving the hosts to the new cluster - would it affect the active VMs? Is there a need to migrate all the VMs to the other hosts first before moving the host? and then move them back to the host, that is in the new cluster. And is it simple as drag-and-drop? or do I have to disconnect, remove and add the host to the new cluster?

I see. Thank you Andrew. Much appreciated. So, these are the planned steps I'll do.

1. Create a new cluster within the same datacenter.
2. Before moving the host, vMotion all the VMs to the other hosts first.
3. Set the host to Maintenance Mode.
4. Move the host to the new cluster (drag-and-drop).
5. vMotion the VMs back to the host, this time in the new cluster.
6. Do the same, steps 2 – 5 to the remaining hosts.
7. Once all the hosts are in the new cluster, enable and configure HA in the new cluster.
8. Test by powering off a host.

Thank you Andrew. So,

1. Create a new cluster within the same datacenter.

2. Before moving the host, vMotion all the VMs to the other hosts first.
3. Set the host to Maintenance Mode.
4. Drag and drop the host out of the cluster first.
5. Then, drag and drop the host to the new cluster.
6. Exit Maintenance Mode.

7. Do the same steps 2 – 6 to the remaining hosts.

Follow-up Question: There are 6 hosts to move with at least 10 - 12 VMs in each hosts. If I have 2 hosts already in the new cluster, can I vMotion the VMs back to the orig host ( from the old cluster to the new cluster)? I’m afraid the host that handles the load of the temporary VMs can’t accommodate with the demand of resources. Although I will distribute the VMs to different hosts.

Assuming I have 2 hosts already moved in the new cluster.

8. vMotion the VMs back to the host (from the old cluster to the new cluster).
9. Do the same steps 2 – 6 to the remaining hosts.
10. Once all the hosts are in the new cluster and the VMs are back to their respective hosts, enable and configure HA in the new cluster.
11. Test by vMotion on a testVM.
Thank you very much for your help Andrew. Keep it up!
