Black Screen flashes after instalaling updates

I have a Windows 7 pro PC on the company network that worked fine until yesterday. The user he shutdown at the end of day to install updates that the WSUS server pushed out

This morning the screen kept flashing  black. When you first logged on  you could see the words on the black screen" program to big to fit in memory"

I ran the SFC / scannow command which did not fix the issue

When you clicked on Windows update in the control panel there was no writing -all you see is a red "X"

I ran the system readiness tool and found nothing other then this update did not apply to your system

I renamed the software Distribution folder and the blinking stopped but the red x remained

When you tried to do a start programs windows update a DOS prompt opened and closed

Any ideas

Start in Safe Mode and try updating the Video driver to see if you can bring stability.

"program to big to fit in memory"  <-- How much memory does the machine have?  4 GB is completely adequate for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

PC has 4 GB of memory. I did uninstall the video driver in safe mode and reinstalled it getting the driver from HP
The machine is 5 months old
Like I said earlier the flashing stopped when I renamed the Software distribution folder
That seems unusual. Also try updating the BIOS and Chipset drivers as they may need updating because of Windows Updates.

5 months old - Can you call HP Support?

I had to reinstall the OS  and the PC is fine. My bet is the Pc was shutdown when it was doing an update  or  an update became corrupt during  install

It was not worth anymore effort troubleshooting
tx for  the feedback
