SCCM 2012 Software Updates - old updates from 2009?

Apparently when I sync updates for Windows 7 in SCCM 2012 R2, there are updates that show up for Windows from like 2009.
Should I still put these into packages to deploy?
It just seems strange that old critical/security updates from 2009 would be retrieved when they're not Expired or Superseded.

Since SP1 was released February 22, 2011, can I exclude all "updates" released prior to that from my update package, since my OS image includes SP1 in it?
Or does SP1 not include all prior needed patches?

No, unfortunately it seems there are patches that were not included in SP1. The best test I can suggest is build your machine and then run it against MS security baseline Analyser (MBSA). Whatever patches it lists, include them in your updates group.
