Error 0x80070780

Hi. So I had a server go down a couple of days ago. The mirrored c: drive lost it's RAID array driver and I ended up rebuilding it. The server was 2012 R2. Not a huge deal other than the time it took, but got it done anyways.

My problem lies with the other volumes (physical disks) that were in the same server. The previous build was 2012 R2 as well. I wasn't really worried because the data that I cared about was on separate physical disk drives and I was able to see those volumes from a command prompt and see the data. Plus, I had them backed up.

My issue is that while all of the files are there, I really can't do anything with them. Mostly pictures and videos, and I first noticed that my image viewer software, ACDsee 14, said that "it could not recognize the source format". With the video files, I get all kinds of messages from VLC Media Player and it will not play them.

One thing I recall is that I was playing around with the built-in deduplication option on these volumes and I am thinking that may be in play.  But here is what I notice:

1. File will not open.
2. Pictures will not even display a thumbnail image.
3. I cannot rename the file.
4. I cannot copy or move the file from it's present location.

The error I get with symptoms 3 and 4 is "error 0x80070780 file cannot be accessed".

I have done the following:

1. Taken ownership of the files/folders. Also set to propagate to subfolders.
2. I have run sfc /scannow on each volume
3. I scanned the drives for errors.
4. I have run chkdsk on each volume.
5. I have cleared any Read Only flags from the files.

Nothing I have done has fixed the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this? One thing of note, and I honestly do not recall if it was set this way previously, but each of the files has an attribute of APL.

Thanks!

the APL attribute indicates those files are actually reparse points - ie: symbolic links to the 'actual' file. At a guess your de-dupe experiment removed the duplicates and left the symbolic links in place.

it appears that they are inaccessible because the link is still there but there is no underlying physical file as a target for the link.

Makes sense, and I appreciate your comment. Forgive my ignorance of Windows Deduplication, but if those files are now symbolic links, where did the original data go? I might assume a database of some sort, and if so, wouldn't that be done at the volume level? Meaning, would the originals reside on the same volume that is still largely intact? And if so, is it possible to find those original files? Thanks again.

Thanks for the response David. Are you saying that adding the Deduplication role will return my files to their original, usable state? I've gotten a little gun shy about using deduplication again now that I know that it may cause problems if I have a future system crash. But if this brings them back, then I am all for it.
Yes it should bring them back.  My test system is a dual boot between the current client O/S and the current server O/S and when I upgraded the client O/S I had to hunt around for a way of installing the current data deduplication .dll's so the client O/S could access deduped volumes.  I've currently given up on data deduplication since I am on the fast ring of W10 and it would be too much of a hassle to keep hacking the system.
Thanks. Reenabling that option fixed my files. Thank you very much.
