How to deploy VM from template in vsphere

Hi Experts,

How do you 'deploy a virtual machine from a template' in vsphere?

I have that option in vcenter but not in vsphere. I deployed an ofv template so the template file is now in vsphere but I still don't have an option. Any ideas?

vsphere 5.1
server 201r2

Thx.

@Andrew - I posted this and didn't realize you posted.

Yes, directly connected to the host.

So I am not using vcenter because I was told by VMware that vcenter can only hold three hypervisors. We are looking to purchase two more vcenters to manage these other 6 hypervisors.

So there is no way to get my template to work in esxi outside of connecting it to vcenter?
If you have Essentials Edition of vCenter Server or Foundation version of vCenter Server, it CAN ONLY MANAGE 3 Hosts!

So what licenses do you have and how many hosts a total of 9 ?

You can use vCenter Server Standard, if you had Standard, Enterprise or Enterprise Plus, but I think you may have Essentials ?

vCenter Server Standard can manage many hosts, up to 1000.

So there is no way to get my template to work in esxi outside of connecting it to vcenter?

Well yes, and no. If you have shared storage, you can sort of use a template, but what you have to do is Deregister the template from the vCenter Server inVentory, change the name of the file from *.VMTX to *.VMX, and then browse and register that VM with your ESXi host.

or Deploy the Template to a VM in vCenter Server, then deregister that VM, and add to the ESXi Inventory.
We have the essentials license. does it makes sense to upgrade...is it expensive to get the next level that will allow us to manage all in one pane of glass or should we just buy two more essential licenses?

we have 9 total hypervisors.

we do not have shared storage. can I still do what you proposed?

thx.
The issue you will experience, is you will end up with 3 standalone versions of vCenter Server, and you will have to login to each one, which is not really any different than logging into three separate hosts, e.g. you cannot move VMs and Templates between your 3 versions of vCenter.

However 3 x copies of Essentials, compared to 1 x copy of vCenter Server + 9 Copies of ESXi Standard per processor will be expensive.

Much easier for management, Essentials is a starter edition, an if you decide to go above 3 hosts, you upgrade to larger licenses.
catching up on this...sorry!
ok, so you are saying we should upgrade to vcenter standard, right?

and if we don't have shared storage how do we use a template in esxi?
It would be *MUCH* easier of you have vCenter Server STANDARD, but you will also have to upgrade ALL your hosts as well, because vCenter Server STANDARD cannot manage Essentials Hosts.

No shared storage, you put the template on the Hosts local storage.
ok I see. Rereading...then closing if no final questions. thx again! you rock!!!
