Laptop -- troubleshooting software ?
What troubleshooting software
do you recommend for my laptop ?
** The screen REMAINS black,
nothing displays, not even during startup

1. powerCord = GOOD, runs other laptops
2. battery = GOOD, runs other laptops
3. monitor = FAILS, plug external monitor in, still fails
4. motherboard = how can I test without inserting a different one ?
5. memory = GOOD, runs other laptops

That's some more good advice. Low voltage on the CMOS battery shouldn't cause these symptoms, though. The computer would still POST, even with a bad battery. You'd just lose your CMOS settings when you remove power to the computer and would have to go into setup and reconfig each time.
I've seen many really strange things happen with spent CMOS batteries, they weren't limited to just forgetting settings.
