P2714H and Windows 8.1 desktop
Here's the situation. Currently we have two 24 inch monitors plugged into a Dell OptiPlex computer running windows 8.1.
The main desktop originates from the display port on the back of the OptiPlex and is converted to DVI and plugs into the DVI port on the back of monitor1.
The second monitor goes from DVI to DVI and handles the extended desktop.
Everything is working fine with the 24 inch monitors.
Initially, I swapped out the two 24s with two 27s by just unplugging the connections at the monitor from the old monitors and plugging in the new.
But then I got the sync error on both monitors indicating that it wasn't reading the signals correctly. I verified everything was at 60 Hz.
I found this link and thought that maybe I needed to enable the display port on the back of the monitors, or at least the one that handled the main desktop, but then I realized that display port from the computer is converted to DVI and is being plugged into the DVI port on the back of the monitor. So I just did not understand why I might need to turn on any display port in the monitor.

Even if I need some sort of a driver update, shouldn't I be able to get some display on the monitors even though it might be incorrect resolution? In my limited experience with this sort of thing I am used to getting some sort of desktop and then maybe installing a new driver if necessary.
What am I missing. Thanks a lot.

By the way I tried the monitor on all three settings. Auto detect, DVI, and VGA even though I know VGA was in the news. I re-booted monitors and rebooted computer several times and verified that all cables were attached properly.
