Recommend software to clone Dell 750 single HD to another 750

Hello,

We have two DELL servers same model units (750), one with 2008 and one with 2003, looking to clone 2008 to 2003 box. We're looking for a one time clone with cross platform capabilities, if possibilities of MB differentiates . I've researched and some of the solutions are pricey. I have questions on Easeus, but would like to hear what others have tried. I prefer Acronis w/ universal restore yet the 1000.00 price tag I can't justify. We're unable to sysprep the 2008 box before cloning and have volume license for compliance. Any thoughts?

$1000 is overpriced!  I have used Acronis and Norton Ghost for many years to clone as well as backup.  Have a look at the Acronis Disk Director $79.00

"Acronis Disk Director transfers all of the source disk data to a target disk. The source disk volumes can be cloned to the target disk "as is", or resized automatically according to the new disk size."

Wayne88 , exactly! I guess I was looking at their windows 2008 server product. I like your solution!
Use CloneZilla. It is opensource and free, and works on server and Desktop OS's. You boot from the CD or you can also put it on a bootable USB stick. It can clone or image.

http://clonezilla.org

The other products usually require you to buy the server version, and they are also much more expensive than desktop versions. Besides symantec stuff (norton ghost) is crap, and acronis is only a little better.
Glad to help raptorIT!  Acronis ABR is a good product once configured properly but it's for backup/recovery.

CloneZilla is the name I was trying to remember and I like the fact that it's free.  However, I don't like the limitations it has.  "The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one." for one and for me that's a deal breaker.

Out of curiosity Rindi, from your experience which part of Ghost/Acronis is crappier than CloneZilla other than the price?

Great feedback, yes agreed sysprep is a must, we want to avoid dup SIDS. The hardware similar however we all know DELL will use a different driver here and there on a motherboard.  I'm going to look into the paragon software now.
The problem is the fax card, I'd love to virtualize this server and call it a day. We could run an eFax service however there is a huge cost savings by using the POTS lines connected to this server and it's backup

Wayne,
Acronis Disk Director Advanced 79.00 is pc only 600.00 for server
raptorIT, you are right.  I didn't click on the "BUY NOW" to read the price for the server.  In all honesty, it's not worth the purchase at that price.  I would go with Rindi's recommendation and use CloneZilla.
Thank you sir and thank you for all the feed back everyone
Im unsure of a way to reset the SIDS after a the clone process. Is that possible, Ive always sysprep then clone.

Or you get a copy of Hard Disk Manager and use it not only for this migration but as a daily maintenance tool plus backup tool on scheduled basis.

Just because hard drives are dirt cheap it doesn't mean you should not reuse old hard drives.  There are many times when I want to clone the data in a hard drive to a smaller one because that's what I have available at a time or simply want to reuse hardware that are available.

Driving a nail into a 2x4 with a tack hammer can be done but a proper framing hammer would do it better.

Irrelevant and you're going off context.  Your argument was the price point.

As I said, in my case sometimes the extra space is unnecessary and there wasn't a need for a new, bigger hard drive.  The cost has nothing to do with anything.  It's more important if there is a need for it.
Guys I really like Paragon, lots of options. 2nd road block is this is a dynamic disk and Paragon would need to convert to basic for doing so. The head designer isn't a fan of converting the disk due to the "possibility" of corruption. Any ideas?
Converting is not a problem. Take first backup of dynamic drive and then proceed with conversion. That would require restart and after the restart is done the drive will be basic with partitions on it.
Plus, if you backup a dynamic drive and then restore it to empty unpartitioned MBR drive then it is automatically restored as basic drive. So migration would accomplish this task automatically in your case.
That is interesting because Paragon didn't even offer the option to backup the dynamic disk. I was trying to use the clone HD option. On a test server, I had to convert then I was able to clone.
I think you are referring to within the OS backup, i misunderstood. Unfortunately I can't install any app within the OS, regulations.
If you are using Boot CD - it does provide backup of dynamic drive. For sure.
What version of Paragon are you using?
Hi sir, the latest version. I am using the boot DVD, with the linux interface.
You can create a WinPE based Recovery CD as well. It has more Windows like interface which is easy to understand.
