I'm not allowed to modify the hosts file is the message I'm getting
You have to run notepad as an administrator and then browse to and open the hosts file in order to modify it.

-saige-
@it_sage  - the hosts file update wont be a bad idea since its locked down. :)
On how many systems are you trying to block Youtube?

Is there already a proxy server?
About 6 machines
@Slingingshot15  were you able to modify the hosts file using an admin ID?
I updated it and still getting YouTube

Not sure if I typed it in incorrectly???
What do you have in your hosts file?  Have you scrutinized the settings in your proxy configuration to determine if you could do ip/mac address filtering?

-saige-
This proxy our school has was set by the Ministry of Education and we have no access to it

The girl in the library said she want YouTube blocked of some software that she can use to monitor the students from her pc
Looking for the path of least resistance, have you attempted to contact the Ministry of Education in order to have them modify the configuration?

If this is not a feasible solution, besides the computers, what do you have administrative access to (think servers, routers, switches, etc.)?

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#      127.0.0.1       localhost
#      ::1             localhost
127.0.0.1               www.youtube.com
Um...  Is "the girl in the library" authorized to set policy on what the computers are able to access?  Just because this person believes that students shouldn't be viewing certain material does not mean that she can legally or ethically block access to that material.

Are the computers provided by the school?  The library?  The Ministry of Education?
Asavener Excellent point!
The children watching porn on YouTube so she does have the right to ask for it to be blocked

I found a chrome extension that seems to be working

Any idea of an Internet Explorer extension or something????
Slingingshot15   did you see my hosts file example i posted?
Yes what about it??
The children watching porn on YouTube so she does have the right to ask for it to be blocked

She has the right, I suppose, to ask for anything to be blocked.  Presumably there is a process for determining what gets blocked.  The question is whether she has the authority to set the policy to actually block it.

The Ministry of Education has apparently decided what sites are allowed over the network connection that it provides.  Presumably there are rules governing its use.

Best of luck to you.
When you modified the hosts file did it look like that?
Yes exactly like that but no luck
I know why... when you saved the file it added a .txt extension to the file.   Rename the original to .bak and take off the .txt off the other one.
Open the folder and click organize on the menu, then click folder and search options, click the view tab, then uncheck, hide extensions for know file types. This is just in case you can't see the extensions.
It says BAK File but still no luck
Right but the file you modified saved as a .txt   you need to remove .txt and it should be just hosts  no file extension.
When I check that etc folder I.am only seeing

Hosts
Lmhosts.sam
Networks
Protocol
Services
For what it's worth, if the browser is configured to use a proxy, the local hosts file will not matter.  The connection gets forwarded to the proxy, and the proxy does the name resolution.
Asavener you are correct. If that's the case this will not matter anyway.
So I guess I need to call the ministry then???
I would start there.  They should be able to provide the best resolution.

So I guess I need to call the ministry then???
I think that's an excellent idea.
Correct, they will need to block this from the firewall.
Personally, I dislike the idea of blocking all of Youtube because some people are accessing questionable content.  For all of the junk on Youtube, there is a tremendous wealth of knowledge there.
Will they be able to block it on certain computers instead of all???
I am pretty sure they can just block adult content and not all of youtube.
Age-restricted content requires that the user log into Youtube.

Flagging content

We rely on YouTube community members to flag content that they find inappropriate.

YouTube staff review flagged videos 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and videos that violate our Community Guidelines are removed from YouTube. Videos that may not be appropriate for all younger audiences are age-restricted.

Flagged videos are not automatically taken down by the flagging system. If a video doesn't violate our guidelines, no amount of flagging will change that, and the video will stay on the site.

If younger people are accessing age-restricted content, then parents should probably be notified, and the library may have some kind of disciplinary system.

If older people are accessing age-restricted content where it can be viewed by under-age children, then it may be a case for law enforcement.  (And parents may need to better monitor their children.)

Probably, the library just needs to implement some kind of system where people viewing offensive material are warned and/or banned.
Hi,

Ideally it would be best to connect with the team that manages the firewall/proxy.
There are ways wherein the specific contents of youtube could be blocked.

Host file entry
============

Kindly confirm if you verified the ping to youtube.com after the host file entry was done.
Do install wireshark and verify the logs as well.
