Roaming profiles - very slow to logon!

We have a simple single Windows server 2008 domain - Several users are fixed to their own PC's and have no issues, the majority of other users login to the network on a roaming profile, often on different Laptops/PC's - There are generally around 20-50 users logged on to the domain at any one time.

Although we are aware of a potential bottleneck with the network speed as it's currently reliant on a 100mb switch and a 74mb wireless network which will be replaced soon, we are finding that roaming profiles can often take 2/5/10/more minutes to logon, this can happen on domain admin accounts as well as lower level accounts and seems to random in the fact that sometimes they login within a few seconds, other times it takes forever, regardless of current network usage, I've replicated the issue with all PC's shutdown and very little network use and connecting just a single Laptop.

Any ideas what else could be causing this, I need to be sure all bases are covered before we start replacing network hardware with risk that the issue might not be resolved?

Depending on how big the profile is (check the size of the top profile folder of the user), 100 MBit probably ain't going to cut it anymore. Slow servers could also be the cause of this. Wifi will probably be the most problematic (the 74 mbit you mentioned probably will never be met, even a single sturdy wall could plummet it to 20mbit).
Then comes the timing. If 20 ppl come in the morning at the same time, they all probably have to wait a bit, while the late comer at 11am, will be slightly faster.
It's basically an accumulation of several factors.

As long as budget allows:

speed up server (faster hard disks)
make sure all nics and switches are gigabit
after the LAN connected PC's are working properly, only then spend time on improving the wifi (use newer faster wifi routers, but only clients with newer faster chipsets can improve, older ones will always be slower)
Additionally to roaming profiles consider using Folder Redirection for the users Documents and Desktop folders.

Thanks for the reply - I've already resigned myself to the fact that the network speed could be compounding the issue and we are looking at upgrading to GB speed for wired devices soon, something I don't understand though, why when only one client PC is switched on and connected would there still be issues with loading the roaming profile?
