Windows Defender not able to really turn off

I'm running Windows 10. I've got Windows Defender app turned off.

However, when I try to install a specific software, I get a message like "Malware found. Windows Defender is removing it."

If I go into TaskMgr, I see there is a  Windows process "Antimalware Service Executable - Windows Defender Service". But, if I try and end the task, it tells me "access is denied."

Any instructions on how to really turn off Windows Defender?

Then may I ask "how did you turn it off"?
anyway here is the correct way to turn off Windows Defender on Windows 7 and higher.

OK, my mistake!

Windows 10 said Windows Defender app was off when I tried to run it from the Start search.

But, going into Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Defender, I see that Real-time protection was back on. It says "You can turn this off temporarily, but if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically."

So, not exactly sure what was going on, given that Windows told me the app was not running, but that the service was running... but I guess bringing it up in Settings allowed me to turn it off.
