I have meanwhile downloaded and installed this distro, and updates worked out of the box without any problems using it's built in tool "Software Updater" which is in the Applications menu.
I also looked for Software Sources, and that is part of the Software Center, under "Edit", "Software Sources". There you can select the servers closest to you.
Besides that, you shouldn't base your conclusions about Linux on just this one, very small and almost unknown distro. There are a lot of distro's and flavors around, some are better, some are easier to use, some are better for this, others for that.

What a pathetic linux distribution is this which fails in simple updates. It also did not detect my Wifi.
Linux still needs ages to be a desktop operating system. I am selecting your answer just to close this question.
