Excel suddenly crashing and spreadsheets lose for one user --- Is there software to automatically save backups on a PC?

So one user has been having a strange issue for the last few weeks.
He will be working on an Excel file and randomly it will close. No warning, no pop us, just close on its own.
When he tried to open the file, it is either gone (this happens most of the time), or the one available is an older version.

I thinking finding the root cause of this may take awhile so in the meantime I would like to set him up with some sort of backup utility that will create a fresh backup of the file after a set interval of time.

Is there anything like that which would work for Office products?

I had an issue in the past where a printer driver was causing such an issue for one of my users. It was an HP printer caused me lots of grief. Try checking that. I know it sounds odd but after hours of troubleshooting that's what we came up with.

You also can try running it in safe mode... it could be an add-on.

@kerick: He is saving the files but even then sometimes loses data.
The last file he saved on his computer. Opened on another computer, crashed a few times, and then lost the data. Not sure what to make of that.
I checked the AutoSave feature and it was set for 10 minutes. The file was open for a few hours and yet nothing is in the AutoSave folder. Why is that?

@Edward: Well I went ahead and just swapped in another PC for him today. Hopefully, that ends it.

Hopefully, it's just his computer corrupting files and nothing greater.
Just in case it doesn't it why I was hoping to find this kind of software.

In the meantime, I found Excel has a backup function in the 'Save As' menu so he is using that.

Well it looks like the new PC is Autosaving his excel sheets whereas the other PC never did.
It does look like the other Excel install was corrupted. I did try repairing and reinstalling a few weeks back but it did nothing.
How reliable is AutoSave? How long are the files kept there?
They are saved until you say delete.
