Supermicro X7DVA-E MB does not see complete memory

Hi team,

I am completely perplexed...  This is a MB that I have had for a very long time.  I upgraded all the memory to 6 sticks of 4G FB-DIMM DDR2-667, which should be 24G total.  The system sees 4GB.  No post errors and BIOS only sees 4GB as well.

All stick are identical and new.  I've tried clearing CMOS to see if it might be corrupt - same thing.  Ran it with no boards, same thing.  Chance CPU's, same thing...

Any clues?

Regards, Pat

Take out all the modules. Insert one, start up and test. Do you see 4 GB. If so, insert one more, start up and test. Do you see 4 GB or 8 GB. If 8, continue with one more and test.

Yeah, you're right.  I will try that again...  I had it down to 2 modules and it only saw 1 of them.  I'll try it again tho.
Set the one working module as base and add a different module.

If no, it may be the BIOS does not allow more than 4 GB.
It is also possible the board cannot handle more than 4 GB (6 slots for 1/2 GB modules maybe).

i would simply read the user's manual of this MB, check the memory section on the Specification, for both the maximum total memory allowed for the system and the maximum size allowed for a single slot.

also be aware that some MBs only accept modules to be installed in pair.

Desktop memory almost always goes in alternate slots, so I assumed you had done this. Certainly the Lenovo machines I service use alternate slots.
what were the Original ram stick models?  and the new ones?
maybe they are just not compatible with this board
Thanks weinberk,

Thanks for pointing out this subtle mistake that I overlooked.  All the the mem is currently FB-DIMM and paired as six sticks of 4GB.  I'll back 4 slots back down to 2GB sticks and try it.
