Small electronic lock help ?

Hi guys,

Just wondering if you guys could suggest the cheapest way to build a electronic lock that could be opened by a button press.

It would also need to be as small as possible and operate on batteries.I'm also planning on making a few so cheap as possible is also great

So far i can think of two possible solutions

1.using the same kind of setup as a DVD opening

2.solenoid,  though these usually require 12v and was hoping to run off AA batteries

Are there anyways to do this better/cheaper

Thanks

What are you planning to do with these? I have a few ideas but it depends on factors like how secure they need to be. What are they locking?

have you checked www.instructables.com ? few ideas there:

Your problem may be the Battery Powered bit though.  You can run Pi's (and so on) on batteries, but not indefinitely.  And, what do you want to happen when the batteries die?  Permanently locked door???
If you can explain a bit more about the proposed usage scenario, we can perhaps help further...

Hi guys,

I really want the most simple lock i can build.

It will be to lock a small wooden box and i would like to press a button(hidden) that is on the box to open it

So a lock in it's simplest form except its electrinic . So a raspberry pi or ardruino would be too expensive.
Hi Tiger858,
I assume the application isn't high security then - wooden box??
A geocache maybe?
Will you need an alternative method of entry if the battery runs flat?
Do you already have the wooden boxes?
Only looking for a simple lock - Does not need to be high security, just something that would stop someone opening a box.

Has to be electronic and be battery powered.

Does not need to have an alternative method of entry.

Electronic cabinet locks look nice but are quite large and expensive and power is a problem.

I have attached a picture(badly drawn)

Wondering how i could do something like this but make it as cheap as possible while also being powered by batteries
