Video | Convert to MP3 | MKV

Hello,

I have started recently to notice that most of the videos on YouTube are of MKV extension.

I used to have some old video convertor software but it does not work for MKV.

I tried several ones from the net that claim they convert MKV but the ones that really worked are converting MKV files without audio.

I need to convert videos to audio.

What do you recommend?

Thank you!

I use jdownloader2 to download YouTube videos.
When I do, I always see a separate audio file besides the video file.
When I'm only interested in the audio, I just download that audio file. Nothing to convert then.
Just my 2 cents.

I like Total Video Converter -- free to download here:
http://total-video-converter.en.softonic.com/
There's also http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ to convert Youtube videos to MP3 files. Nothing to install.
Even easier is to just put "ss" in front of the "youtube" part of the address do d/l the video.

Example:  www.ssyoutube.com/fhjkldjfljadjfljf

From that web page you can install their download extension onto Chome and I believe Firefox.

This makes downloading videos as easy as it can be.

They come down in .mp3 format.

zzynx, ScottCha:

I can try this with future downloads.

At the moment I have already downloaded a number of MKV that I need to convert.

Can you help here?
Just use VLC player for this. apart from being the best media player around that can handle almost every codec man has made, it can also convert from one format to another, or just extract audio from a video and create an MP3 file.

yes, VLC is a great player! ... and it can play caption (SRT) files too ... did not realize it could also convert, thanks
Go with VLC as Rindi suggested.  It's free and one of the best players out there.
here is the download link for VLC from its maker, VideoLAN:

Thank you all.

I have VLC, like crystal, I didn't know it converts. However, after trying it, it doesn't convert bulk, you'll have to specify the files one by one with all input/output details. I have a number of MKVs and that will not be practical.

Hi zzynx,

The link you provided says the batch encode comes with version 3.0 while the latest I was able to find on the main site is version 2.2.2.

Do I search in other sites or should I stick to the main site?
I read:
Batch convert is supported via the GUI in VLC 3.0.0
If you cannot wait, download a nightly build.

Meaning the nightly build is 3.x.x (cf. http://nightlies.videolan.org/. But these are unstable builds)
The last stable version is 2.2.3 (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html)

I also read:
Otherwise, use command-line batch transcoding below.
So for versions < 3.0.0. you should do it via command line scripts as described in that article.

Yes, I read that too, but I am not familiar with command lines. That's why I was looking for an application with a friendly GUI.
Then download and install VLC version 3.0.0 from http://nightlies.videolan.org/
("Unstable" doesn't mean it will blow up your PC. It's just that you could encounter bugs)
"("Unstable" doesn't mean it will blow up your PC)."

Actually it will only blow up your PC on Friday the 13's if you are running it under Windows 8 or 8.1...;).

Merete!

This seems interesting. Let me try it out!
Very good
I love the simplicity of converting my other video with YTD as well you wont be disappointed feesu I have used it for near on 6 years with great success., it can cut , convert and download, en-mass large amounts of short video.  Even alter the volume.
Has an inbuilt player as well see the top tabs " Download-Convert-Activity-Play "
Remember to set your output destination to the desktop or your preferred folder first, click on the folder to save to.
Cheers

Then you should try out jdownloader2 too! (cf. my 1st comment)
Start up the program and simply copy the YouTube video's url. It shows you the video and audio file you can download.
Give Handbrake a look.

I am sorry all for not getting back sooner.

I have tried out all of them.

YTD seems to be the best.

https://handbrake.fr/ and jdownloader2  do not support Arabic letters while converting.

Correct me if I am wrong.
>> jdownloader2 does not support Arabic letters while converting
jdownloader2 doesn't convert anything. It just downloads video's.
But it maybe lacking support for Arabic characters. I've never tried downloading files with Arabic characters. What happens if you do?

Arabic letters show corrupted.
OK. If that's a show stopper for you, you shouldn't use jdownloader2 then.
Rindi and I also supplied valid and workable solutions to this question.

I think that when someone can close a question and award themselves full points there is an obvious conflict of interests.
Well I dont believe in giving points for the sake of giving points.
ScottCha mentions>Rindi and I also supplied valid and workable solutions to this question. #a41841884 << how so?
those suggestion did not provide the tools to convert the video to audio why get points?

And then you say>I think that when someone can close a question and award themselves full points there is an obvious conflict of interests.<< why?  that's a shame you feel like that Scottcha,
I dont do this just for points my comment was the solution..
feesu stated that youtube downloader seemed the best as it does convert the video to mp3.
So I stand by my comment #a41581080 as the solution.
Of course the moderators can split points or just delete the question.
No worries with me either way.
VLC Player CAN convert Videos to Audio easily.
Really?  How so? I know it records the screen. Could you provide that I would be interested
Windows moviemaker also saves audio only  from video but is limited to mp4 and mpeg etc not all video formats

Awe of course I had forgotten about the audio part, yes I have used VLC to convert video lots of times but never thought to do a whole video to audio. I also provide those steps so the asker understands,, Thanks so much for reminding me.
A split well deserved.
cheers
Agreed.  In fact I just used Rindi's suggestion just the other day to do that exact same thing.
No one got anything to say now?
Ok accept rindi https:#a41575739  and  he was so nice to explain it for me  with VLC so I could remember which would be good for others split rindi https:#a41845567
