Dell Precision 7710 HDMI VGA Adapter - No Signal From Computer to Dell ST2421L External Monitor

Trying to connect Dell Precision 7710 to Dell ST2421L External Monitor via Dell HDMI - VGA Adapter . External monitor menu shows "No Signal From Computer." Same message when adapter connected to VGA cable coming from external monitor even when adapter not plugged into the HDMI slot on computer. Tried another Dell monitor (not sure model) earlier, same thing. Tried another adapter, same thing. Is there a setting on Precision that needs to be tweaked?

Appreciate help on this!

Thanks.

Look for a function key F4 maybe to enable the external monitor, you can also find this in the operating system. Also sometimes it helps to attach the hdmi cable and restart the pc.

Scott
F4 doesn't work. Will try to restart PC with HDMI cable attached.
Sorry I meant to suggest that you look at your F keys to see which one has a monitor icon on it. On my Dell its F8 and its required to plug in the external monitor first and then hold down the Fn key while pressing F8. it may be different on your PC.

Scott
You can also look in control panel / display to see if the external monitor is recognized by the Operating system. Once in Control Panel/Display choose "Screen Resolution" and see if two monitors are shown.

Scott
I used F8 and chose to Extend display, did not work. Restarted system with cable connected , still not working.
So the problem is the HDMI output itself as I just tried to go HDMI to HDMI into another monitor and there is no signal to monitor.
There are a number of possible issues, do you have the correct video card driver installed?

Scott
All drivers are correct for the 7710. I verified this.
Could it be hardware in the system board not making th physical connection?
test it on another pc also !
What Graphics card does it have? Is it an NVidia, AMD or Intel GPU? If it is NVidia, you should have an NVidia utility installed and with that you would add displays, control HDMI outputs etc. Likewise AMD has something similar, usually called catalyst control center, and also Intel has something like that.

Besides, what OS are you running on?
Other (older Precision) PC works fine with same monitors, same cables, same adapter.
Hi rindi,

Has both Intel Graphics and NVivia. Opened NVidia utility and tried everything I could see. The strange thing is I could not see any control for HDMI output. This machine has only HDMI out, no VGA. Running Windows 7 Pro. Would it be important for me to look up the exact version of NVIdia controller and Intel controller? These are the factory shipped controllers, and the drivers were all reinstalled using Dell Command Center for the Precision 7710.
If it has a hybrid video system, you usually have a button or key combination to switch between the intel and NVidia GPU. The intel GPU uses less power and might not support HDMI, while the NVidia uses more power and may support HDMI. So you may first need to turn on the NVidia GPU before you can see HDMI there. If you don't also look for a a switch next to the HDMI port. I have an Asus netbook with HDMI port, and there is a switch next to it to turn the output on or off. If after that you still don't see HDMI in the NVidia Control Center, download and reinstall the NVidia driver fronm the Dell site.
Hi rindi,

There is no HDMI switch. How do you turn on NVidia GPU?

Thanks,

Shanknomore
That would be listed somewhere in the manual for your PC.
No manual.
Online downloadable from Dell's website? Or installed as a pdf or similar on the PC?
If you can't find the answer I will call Dell Pro Support today. If this leads to the solution then I will give you credit for Assist to Solution.
Another thing you can look at is the BIOS, it may be necessary to enable the NVidia card there, or HDMI or disable something like "Optimus" (when that is on it would normally use the Intel GPU to optimize the power usage).

Or look for a utility installed that toggles between the 2 GPU's.
shanknomore - did you test the monitor and cable + adapter on another pc, as i asked yet?
