How does a domain get blacklisted?

I understand that a domain is blacklisted because it is the origin of unwanted emails, but, on a high level, how is it communicated to the blacklist servers that the mail is unwanted and a blacklist status is needed?

From what I understand, it also matters how your domain exchange is configured. A badly configured exchange with no spf record can make it likely to be recorded as spam by another organization.
