Downloading a video we got mp4 and tmp so why won't it play with VLC or WMP or Nero?

The video was said to be 12mb mp4. After download it was 9.7mb mp4 and 2.3mb tmp.
I assume tmp = temporary?

What was temporary about it since it was part of the 12mb file?

The media file .mp4 won't open and play with VLC.
It plays on WMP but there is no audio.

I just opened another mp4 video already on my system and it plays fine with VLC. Before it played I did get "building font cache."

I go back to the new download and it won't play.

The newly acquired mp4 and tmp are named media files.
I did not name them media files.

I just tried to play it on Nero and got the same result as with WMP. Video but no audio.
VLC gets no video and no audio.

I hope the audio is not on that tmp file.

The download helper shows me the progress of the download. Nothing else is needed.

The download method was Download Helper (via) Firefox and that has been used to download all the other videos on my system. They open and play fine with VLC.

I've never had a video download end up with two files in the same folder until now.

I have a codec pack on my system. Why would codec be needed on an mp4?

The video download was uploaded by a friend only 8 days ago. Corrupt is unlikely.

I just downloaded another video. Same result. It will not play on VLC at all.
It plays video only on Nero and WMP. No audio.
Same thing as far as files. A 9.95mb mp4 file and a 1.98mb tmp file and both files show in the downloads folder as separate files.

From the properties of one there is no "audio" codec.

I removed Shark codec and got K-Lite.

Re-download and still got a tmp file. WMP would not play it at all with some error shown. I changed the default to VLC and it plays fine on all 3 media players.
