Btw, there's a 2nd edition of Carol's book that is just released.
If I get this 2nd edition, does it cover the older version's information
as well or need to get both?

I haven't seen old or new books, but I can't imagine that much from older OS releases could be left out without significantly impacting the completeness. Most enhanced security or administration features are built on or extensions of earlier ones.
The biggest changes with 7.1 and later is no more twinax support, and no more PDU... Many smaller changes... IBM is very good about leaving older technologies in as long as they are still useable or supportable... We still have some code that is from the System/36 days...
re "leaving in older..." Well... whether that's been a "good" thing or not, I'd consider it neutral. Good for many for a time; not good at all for plenty of others. For learning security/administration on iSeries or one of the newer models in the line, it means more detail that has to be considered without ever being used. How many sites still use FTS (File Transfer Support), i.e., System/36 file transfer? How many know that it exists? How many know how to control it? Many customers in the past decade possibly never ran across it. Various examples exist.
