Synology DS216 - sharing question
Purchaed a DS216 for a client as a means of them being able to share files bi-directionally with 10 outside contractors.
I want to keep it as simple as possible. Create 10 dirs, 1 user account for each dir, or a group with users in the group for each account. That is fine.
I am wondering if the url that is generated when you right click on the folder remains static so each vendor can ALWAYS use it for that folder and all sub folders/files.
Secondly - I see they can download from it, but I do not see ANY way to upload to the folder. Synology's support seems incredibly weak, anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

Hey there
Ok using synologys dyndns opened port 5000, now able to get to the file station remotely!!
Thanks for that!!
Is it true you can only upload individual files? Can't select more than one? If so not really sure how this is better than dropbox.
What are your thoughts, Yes the company we installed it for has a domain, but this was really intended to extend out to their 10-12 vendors for a place to exchange/update/drop/copy project files - so I am thinking no need to incorporate it into AD.
Any other killer features I should be looking at?
Thanks!
Your the best!

Once file station is open, users can drag and drop from Windows however many files they want at a time, just as if they were copying from one Windows folder to another.
So it's a lot like Dropbox, I suppose, except that you're not relying on a third party to host your docs, and you can manage your own backups on the server side, your own versioning, etc.

Thanks again
Odd - ok so using dyndns - as a test from a remote location via IE, I login to the file station using synology's dyndns, can log in, but to upload files to file station via browser, I need to right click in the folder window within the browser and there is an option for upload from a drop down menu.
I don't see a way to drag multiple files. Is it something in my config? The same applies to downloading, right click download, not drag. Remember there is no client on the desktop, making the assumption that the third party users wouldnt have a client, What am I missing?
Thanks!

Open File Station.
Open Windows Explorer (on PC).
Select multiple files in Windows Explorer.
Drag into File Station.

Correction - Ok was able to drop from Windows explorer several files to folder in file station, what about the other way, from file station to desktop or folder? Is there a way to do multiple files in this direction?
Ever use any of synologys solutions to run VMs? I have to look at that (sorry) should post another question for that.

Yes. Select multiple files in Filestation (e.g., using control-click, or shift-click), click on the Action button and select Download. A popup window will come up, from which you select "Open with [WIndows Explorer]".
Then a regular Windows Explorer window will pop up, containing the selected files. From there, you can drag them into any other folder open in Windows Explorer.

You can run multiple virtual machines on a Synology, and Synology makes it very easy with a package called Virtual DSM Manager, but it's not compatible with your particular Synology box (the DS416). it's compatible with these Synology devices:
6-series: RS2416RP+, RS2416+, RS18016xs+
15-series: DS2415+, DS1815+, DS1515+, RS815RP+, RS815+, DS415+
14-series: RS3614xs+, RS3614xs
13-series: RS3413xs+, RS10613xs+
12-series: DS3612xs, RS3412xs, RS3412RPxs
11-series: DS3611xs, RS3411xs, RS3411RPxs
There may be a more convoluted way to set up virtual machines on a Synology, without using Virtual DSM Manager, but it's not something I've ever explored.

Thank you sooo much for taking the time to answer my questions - you have been a huge help.
One more quick one, When you select multiple files to download from the file station - to a folder on a windows desktop - it seems to automatically zip them. Is there a way around this I am not seeing?
Thanks again!

I think we already dealt with this:
"Select multiple files in Filestation (e.g., using control-click, or shift-click), click on the Action button and select Download. A popup window will come up, from which you select "Open with [Windows Explorer]".
Then a regular Windows Explorer window will pop up, containing the selected files. From there, you can drag them into any other folder open in Windows Explorer. "
Alternatively, in Filesation, you can MOUNT the folder you want to copy the files to.
To do this: From Windows, share the folder. You'll be giving it a share name, like TARGET.
Then, in Filestation, mount the shared folder using CIFS: \\yourmachinename\TARGET
The shared folder will then be mapped to a virtual folder that shows up in Filestation.
Then you can select multiple files on the Synology in Filestation, right-click on the selected files, and copy them to the virtual folder you just created. This actually copies them to the folder you just shared on your Windows machine, without zipping.

If you have them click on the link you created for file/folder sharing, then, no, they can't upload, because that link is intended for sharing files FROM the Diskstation, and when you share those links, the users don't need an account or password at all.
But uploading to the folder is easy. There are a number of different ways to do this, but perhaps the easiest is:
Users logs into Diskstation using their user account name and password.
They open Filestation on the Diskstation.
They should find themselves in their home folder.
They press the "Upload" button in the upper left hand corner of the Filestation window.
They can upload whatever they want from the PC they're working on.
