Synology NAS Backup Question: Win2012 R2 (Source/Site A) in LA backup to an Offsite Synology NAS (Destination/Site B) in NY --no VPN
Does or has anyone had any experience with Windows 2012 file servers backing up to offsite Synology NASs? A customer has a Synology NAS in production and has asked if we can use his Synology NAS to backup their Windows 2012 R2 server? The NAS is miles away from his office's server. I researched a built-in Synology cloud feature but, the built-in cloud feature would only sync files in real-time and thus, may be irrelevant should a file need to be retrieved after it was deleted and the cloud sync synchronized with the deleted file hence, the file would not be available after the sync.
I thought to ask here in the event that someone has executed a remote backup to an offsite Synology NAS successfully.

@Rob:
The NAS and server are on different WANs (locations) hence, not on the same LAN. A site-to-site VPN does not exist. Due to the systems not being on a LAN, I am seeking a software solution that can perhaps work through a firewall. Any suggestions? I came across the following for a possible SFTP backup solution. http://www.acebackup.com/tour/ftp_backup.htm

Thanks akahan! I chatted with Synology support today and they recommended the same as a backup solution.
Can you access the NAS shares from the server you want to back up?
IF YES
- Then maybe look at using back up tool i.e FreeFileSync/SyncShare or anything to do the initial copy then incremental copies over the network
IF NO
- Then set up a Site to Site VPN connection and use a backup tool i.e FreeFileSync/SyncShare or something that does incremental, and push the incremental over the VPN.
