Server 2008 - Server 2012 Migration

I have an upcoming scenario

Current Server:  Primary DC - Active Directory 2008
New Server: To become Primary DC - Active Directory 2012r2

My client is requesting that I keep the old server as a secondary DC, how can I go about this if I am transferring FSMO roles?  I need my new server to be the primary and this old server just as a failover so to speak.  Also the old server will continue to house Exchange 2010 -

Thoughts?  Thank you

You are aware there is no such thing as a Primary DC in active directory terminology, right?

You don't HAVE to move them.  If the old server ever fails, you can seize them.  (not ideal, but not generally a problem).

To properly transfer there are several methods, via the GUI, ntdsutil, or PowerShell.

I tend to use the NTDSUTIL method - I refer to Dan Petri's article on the subject:

Sorry about my wording I am just meaning DC1 - my primary new server.
Is it 2008 or SBS 2008? If it is 2008 you just need to install 2012. It will update the schema to 2012. Promote the 2012 to a DC and than transfer the FSMO roles to it. The 2008 server just becoms a backup domain controller.

If it is a SBS 2008 you have a different scenario all together.

So I would like my new server to be DC01
and the old server DC02 -

Thanks much, I will give it a go.  :) :)
You really should be answering our questions to clarify what you have.  If you do what LockDown32 said but have the wrong version of server, things will LOOK ok... for a few days or even up to 3 weeks... THEN the old server will start shutting down.

DNS is done automatically.  DHCP is optional.
Just to be totally clear, the highest DFL, FFL will still be 2008. Since you are still keeping Exchange on WS2008, renaming the machine names would cause a lot of things to break. Same goes with shares, roaming profiles.. I think you get the picture.

Will the highest DFL still be 2008 on the new server that will be 2012.

The server right now is SBS 2008 - migrating to 2012 Standard r2 - Lockdown32?  Exchange 2010 will reside on the SBS 2008 server due to financial restraints on the company for the new.  They need the new server to be separate from the old but keeping it for an Exchange server only and DC2 in the event of a failure.... hope this is more clear.
OK. Obviously you would migrate the Exchange but otherwise I don't see a problem.
