asked on

will drivers for a CD/DVD recorder be needed for a Compaq laptop running Windows XP?

Hello and Good Afternoon Everyone,

I wish to backup a friend's iTunes music to an external 1TB hard drive.  However, his Compaq machine is old and running Windows XP.  Despite of those facts, will XP still load its native drivers and autodetect the external drive?

          Thank you

Hi

A slight correction here.  The USB external device to be hooked up is a cd/dvd burner or recorder.  I wish to backup the iTunes music to 4GB DVD -R's

          Thanks

@nobus....  my apology for leaving out the model number.  It is a Compaq Presario V5000: model V5315WM.

I will be resuming my troubleshooting efforts using a variety of suggestions given within this post.  Seeing that it is a much older laptop, I probably will not put too much time into it.  I simply want to have it running smooth enough to backup my friend's iTunes and pictures to DVD - R's.

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions and tips.  I will be back in touch with closing remarks : - )

George
Please can you tell us the size of the data you want to backup? so we can be clear about the media you will use (i will tell you the proper one because if it is too much you will be burning too many DVDs)
to backup ituse - simply hook the laptop drive to a working system, and copy the iTunes folder over :  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201625

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your insightful suggestions.  Without a doubt, all are great ones : - )  At this point, I am unsure of the exact size of the data backup because some songs have check marks by them and some do not as indicated within iTunes 12.1.3.6.  I will be working on this project at a more in-depth level today in order to gain more insights into the best options for backing up my friend's iTunes music.

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

My LiteOn 24X CD/DVD burner was automatically detected by Windows XP.  It was very simple because it was a matter of just connecting the power chord, the USB cable to the laptop, and starting up the system.  The operating system did the rest by loading its native drives.

         Thanks again.

George,
Thanks for the update. Good to hear that everything went smoothly. Regards, Joe
