BT ( British Telecom ) block email account when using Windows Live Mail

I have a client with a very strange problem.

She has a consumer BT email account. It has being working fine for the last few years on Windows Live Mail on a WIndows 8/10 PC. It is set up as a POP account using the settings as offered by BT.

Suddenly, a few weeks ago, she was unable to get her emails. If she logged into BT webmail, she was told that the account was blocked as there was too many unsuccessful logon attempts and to change her password.

If she changes her password, she is able to get access again but with the issues listed below.

As a process of elimination, we have found:

1. If she continues to use BT Webmail, and doesn't touch Windows Live Mail, there are no problems with a blocked account. She has used it like this for a week without an issue.

2. If she uses Windows Live Mail, she is able to send and receive emails for a short period - maybe a day or two - and then the account is blocked. The computer isn't on all the time and she only checks her email a few times a day.

We have contacted BT who weren't much use. Essentially, they said to use webmail. The client, however, does not like it and would prefer to use Windows Live Mail.

I am considering changing the email program to an alternative but I am concerned this would only create the same issue,

Has anybody experienced anything similar or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.
