Inverting colors with Photoshop

Using Photoshop Professional 11 on a Windows 7 platform, I'm having some challenges inverting colors in an image.  I am a novice with Photoshop.  When I open the original image and select Image>Adjustments>Invert, the result is nowhere close to a true inversion.  Some guidance would be appreciated.  User generated image  User generated image

use Ctrl+I to invert entire layer.
You can change colors with

Image > Adjustments > Color Balance / Hue-Saturation / Levels / Curves

Thank you for your comments.  Ctrl + I produces a result identical to the second image in my original post.  Regarding your second comment, I'm unclear how to implement it.  Image>Adjustments>Color Balance opens a dialog window which does not have Hue-Saturation or other options.User generated image
Hi,

Color Balance
Hue-Saturation
Levels
Curves

are different selections you can chose
close color balance, and chose Image>adjustments> hue-saturation, similarly others
Hope that helps,

OK,  I must have misunderstood the meaning of inversion.  I wanted to replace the colors in the image with their counterparts.  White would become teal green, and teal green would become white.
Image->Adjustments->Replace color
